Despite the fact that I had the best intentions of finishing the blog entries about my trip to Italy, my life has taken a slightly different turn. The photos of the trip are now on a computer far away and it would be a bit daft writing about it without pictures.

So, if you don’t mind, I am going to stick to South Africa for the time being, until I can get hold of those photies again.

Over December I was lucky enough to drive through one of my favourite parts of South Africa, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Anyone who has ever been to the Drakensberg will understand why I say this is one of my favourite parts of the country.

However, we didn’t go to the Drakensberg but our route did take us down the notorious Van Reenens Pass. The reason why it is notorious is because it is long, the gradient steep and for some reason, drivers lose the plot and have accidents. Fortunately, my chauffeur knows what he is doing behind a steering wheel and we were spared any mishaps.

The draw card of this area is not the pass which is very scenic I might add. For me, it has to be a tiny little gem in the town of Van Reenen.

The Smallest Church in the World

This little town has the honour of being home to the smallest church in the world. It is Roman Catholic and was built in memory of a brave man who saved 8 people from a burning building. As a special twist to the tale, the church seats only 8 people.

Taking photos inside any place of worship is something I am always hesitant to do because it seems somewhat disrespectful. Because of my reticence in this regard, I refrained from snapping away inside but what I can tell you is this. The building has the most beautiful stained glass windows and, as with all places of worship, regardless of the religion, there is a sense of calm and tranquility that hangs in the air.

Naturally, because of the uniqueness of this church, it is popular with people wanting intimate weddings or getting married in a church with a difference.

An added bonus to this little stop off is the fact that there is a lovely tea garden/restaurant. You can enjoy a nibble in the garden while admiring the spectacular views.

The Perfect Place for Afternoon Tea

So, if you are ever travelling from Johannesburg to Durban or the other way around, plan to have your lunch here. It is well worth the break!
